author of Moby Dick)

Thanks to Berkshire coordinator Peter Bergman, Hidden-Techies have a
tremendous opportunity to make business and personal contacts on Saturday,
June 3, including meeting David Fleming, the new executive director of the
recently-restored Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield.

Fleming, who was chosen from a field of 38 candidates during a national
search, has 28 years of experience directing performing art centers in New
Jersey, Texas, Delaware and Wisconsin. He earned his master of fine arts
degree in theater arts from Smith College in Northampton. He will begin his
duties full time on or about June 1. The restoration of the circa 1903
building is expected in mid-July, with the first performance, the
award-winning musical "Rent," slated to start Aug. 29.

Besides being among the first to meet Fleming, and scope out the sorts of
subcontracted work the theatre will need, you will also have a chance to
tour the restore Colonial and meet with executives of the Barrington Stage
at tea time. Becky Smith owner of the Thaddeus Clapp House, Wendell Avenue,
is providing the Hidden-Tech community tea and snacks later in the day.
There is no charge.

This is a kid's friendly day so don't hesitate to bring them. There's no
guarantee that food will be on sale at the Arrowhead Museum, home of Herman
Melville and a gorgeous spot, so make sure you bring a snack and something
to share if you like.

And if you can't make it to Arrowhead or the Colonial Theatre tour, reach
Amy Zuckerman about dropping in for tea.

SCHEDULE:

11:30 AM - Gather at Arrowhead for tour of "Becoming Pittsfield: the
Gilded Age" and - if people want - a tour of the Melville House as well.
Price $9 per person for those who want to see the house and exhibit. Lunch
on the lawn.

2 p.m. - Tour of the Colonial Theater

3 p.m. - Tea at Thaddeus Clapp House, Wendell Avenue with an informational
chat with Barrington Stage Co.

DIRECTIONS

MAP

Simple:
Arrowhead is located at 780 Holmes Road in Pittsfield.
From the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90), take Exit 2 (Lee). Follow Route 20 West for
approximately 7.5 miles.; it will merge with Route 7 North. Turn right onto
Holmes Road at the traffic light. Arrowhead is 1.5 miles ahead on the left.

From points north: Take Route 2 (The Mohawk Trail) to Route 7 South.
Follow Route 7 South until you cross the Pittsfield-Lenox town line. Turn
left onto Holmes Road at the traffic light. Arrowhead is 1.5 miles ahead on
the left.

Recommended by Hidden-tech member who lives near Arrowhead:

The fastest way from the Northampton area is Route 9 West. After you
pass from Dalton into Pittsfield, the first light allows you to turn
left onto Hubbard Avenue (crossing a bridge). Follow Hubbard past the
Berkshire Crossing shopping plaza entrance and keep going straight when
it turns into Division Road (after the light at the intersection with
East St. in Pittsfield on your right and and South St. in Dalton on your
left), until that ends at Williams St. (Burgner's Farm Store will be on
your left), just over 3 miles from Route 9. Turn right on Williams and
follow it for 2.1 miles to the intersection with Holmes Road, where
there is a 4-way light. Turn left on Holmes and Arrowhead will be about
1.5 miles ahead on your right.

If you are coming from the North (i.e., Route 2), take Route 8 South
from North Adams into Pittsfield and turn left onto Route 9 East (you
will be at a major intersection with shopping centers on all sides),
then right at the next light onto Hubbard Avenue, after which just
follow the instructions above.

The above may well be more complicated to explain than to follow, but it
could save about half an hour if you are coming from Northampton or
Amherst and is a much more pleasant drive than the Mass Pike.
